The first bottle of Gordon's Spiced Pepper was made at a kitchen table in Glendale, California in the early 1980's. The company was started by Gordon Alexander because he was unhappy with the table pepper offered by the stores and in restaurants. There was too little taste and too much dust. He ended up carrying around his own pepper shaker to restaurants. There was a bottle in the car at all times, just in case. The original blend came about using standard ingredients found at a local grocery store. Later, he bought from a large Los Angeles area supplier of spices who could provide fresh black pepper in custom grinds, and the best chile peppers in the world. The original Gordon Pepper was sold by mail order and through early adopter spicy food catalogs. There were also the southern California health food stores and other markets that sold jars of the early Gordon's Pepper. The company went quiet for years while Gordon raised a family and worked at various corporate jobs that allowed him to travel the world and experience the wonderful flavors of food from other lands.
In 2005 Gordon Alexander started Gordon's Pepper Company as a mail order supplier of gourmet ground pepper blends. At this time the company was producing small batches to fulfill internet orders. The gordonpepper.com website was established in June of 2005. By November 2006 the company found a facility for manufacturing of the products and started blending their seasonings in a certified food manufacturing building. They also changed the labels and packaging using the same methods as other spice products already found in stores. The year 2007 was great because they started putting Gordon's Pepper on the shelves in Whole Foods Market. Gordon's Pepper can now be found all over Texas. We are known for our good tasting black pepper and chile pepper blends, as well as fresh ground pepper. In 2007 the company incorporated forming Gordon's Pepper Company, LLC, a Texas corporation.
A key product, Dragon Flakes, won three national awards for 2008. One award is from the National Fiery-Foods Challenge held in Fort Worth, Texas, one was Americas Best Celebrity Food Show, and the other award is called the Scovie Award from Fiery Foods and BBQ magazine. Later that year Dragon Flakes was featured as 'Editors Pick' in CHEF Magazine and at Christmas it was featured in The Chile Pepper Magazine as the Top 100 Gifts to Buy. The company also joined the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) to connect with buyers and increase its standing in the food trade industry.
